4 Types of Retaining Walls

Gravity Retaining Wall

Gravity Walls

Gravity walls are a type of wall system that takes advantage of the earths gravitational pull to keep it in place. Typically gravity walls do not get much taller than 3.5 foot in height from the bottom of the base course to the top of the cap. Gravity walls typically will not have any additional loads placed on top of them.

When building large retaining walls taller than that of a gravity wall it is essential that the fill materials behind it is stabilized with materials such as geo grid, earth anchors, or even a combination of both. MSE walls generally need to be engineered.

Precast Cantilever retaining wall panels

Cantilever Walls

Cantilever Retaining Walls are almost exclusively built in place using loads of rebar and concrete. In shorter cantilever retaining wall applications, precast units can be bought and delivered to your project site.

Sheet Piling Retaining Wall

Piling Retaining walls are a special breed of retaining wall that require very special equipment to install. Piling walls are typically used to support soils for underground structures and you never see them.

3 Common Retaining Wall Mistakes

Pre-planning your project and choosing a certified retaining wall contractor are two simple tasks that could save you loads of time and money in the future.

1. Poor Water Management

The number one cause of retaining wall failures is due to poor drainage.  Water is a powerful force and saturated soils become extremely heavy. If  water is not taken into account, there is a high probability your wall will fail.

2. Poor Base Installation

The base is the life of a retaining wall. If the base is not installed properly, the wall will fail much sooner than was ever planted. Build on solid ground, build on the rock and the wall will stand for a lifetime.

Everyone then, who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. Matt 7:24-25

3. Poor Retaining Wall Engineering

Planning and design is a major part of building a retaining wall the right way. Ensure you are hiring retaining wall professionals that are certified in their trade.
